What are the responsibilities of DIRECT CARE STAFF?
Employees provide direct care to individuals with disabilities, helping them achieve their maximum potential for independence. Duties may involve instruction/training in using public transportation, shopping, recreation, financial management, cooking, housekeeping, personal care, employment, and/or communication. Reliable, responsible direct care staff are critical to the well-being of West Virginians with disabilities.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum age is 18. Must have the ability to communicate in English (both verbally & in writing) and be capable of working responsibly with confidential personal information. Must be able to work as a part of a team and meet all employment requirements dictated by State regulations. Reliable transportation is a must. This position is an ideal way for college students in related fields of study (health sciences, social work, education) to gain relevant work experience while completing their education!

TRAINING:
Standard, agency-sponsored training is required before working directly with clientele. In addition, to ensure competence and continuity of care, new employees typically "shadow" veteran staff for an orientation period before working solo.

SALARY:
Pay begins at $7.28 / hour. Annual increases are provided, as are occasional bonuses.

* Employers rely on Medicaid reimbursement from WV DHHR to pay direct care staff. The hope is that by presenting the state with concrete data demonstrating that a wage increase gets staffing vacancies filled, the state will increase Medicaid reimbursement rates & the special introductory wage can become the ongoing wage.
